Design Research

Week 1

A brief description of individualized learning goals

For this class, I would like to know about the design research or human-centered design systematically. From the architecture background, we have earlier research such as the site analysis for preparation when we start our projects. In the practice of architecture, extracting user feedback is essential to a robust design.

However, it can be challenging to find sufficient time to make design adjustments. Design response cycles are long, sometimes lasting years, so it is difficult to foster a close connection between designer and user. In other word, we always pay attention to a larger scale instead of taking care of every single person. Architecture has a slow iteration which is hard to get feedback from the users immediately.

So I would like to start to consider the problem as a human-centered perspective after taking this class. Using methods to redesign some of my former project to build a stronger portfolio. Also, I hope to make more interesting project as well.

Week 3

Virtual vs. Real Workplace (individual)

"Big Four firm PwC is now allowing some new recruits to work the hours they want to through their Flexible Talent Network."

Laura Hinton, chief people officer at PwC, said: “People assume that to work at a big firm they need to follow traditional working patterns – we want to make it clear that this isn’t the case. In order to recruit the best people, we recognise that we need to offer greater flexibility, different working options and a route back in for those looking to restart their careers.”

give people the flexibility of when or where they would like to work.

allow them to be more effective

online job portals,  online social networks, speak to candidates (take care family issue.)

Sharing working space

- Wework, Kr space, UCOMMUNE

WeWork :

A community is surrounded by a group of like-minded individuals being part of something bigger than yourself

inspire people to work harder.

provide a comfortable working environment

open space is overrated(variety needs depends on different  job requirements)

ROWE (results-only work environment)

What the leaders need to care about is the results of the work instead of the length of staying in the office.

Advantages:

1. cost saving

2.resource sharing

3.exchange of human talents.

Pain points:

leaders: lack of control power

can't guaranty the trade secret

How might we...?

amp up the good:

remove the bad

explore the opposite

question and assumption

go after adjectives

create an analogy from the need or context

play against the challenge

change a status quo
